One Friday night in 1997, we were racing at Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley, and David was killin 'em! He won the Jr. Dragster Majors that night, taking out Jeff Snell in the finals. We headed home, taking with us, our friends car. We were going up to Pocatello, Idaho the next day for a race, and we were taking their car for them. We got home, and loaded the trailer for the following day. We left the house by 8:30. We were moving along very well. We were about 20 miles away from the racetrack, in Malad, Idaho, and Jay realized there was smoke coming out of the right top corner of the enclosed trailer. He pulled over, and him and Roylene got out to look at what was going on. Roylene was on the passenger side, where the door on the side of the trailer was, and she opened it. Flames, and smoke poured out of the opened door, up into the sky.
We had a somewhat electric door on the back of the trailer, and we would have had to go into the trailer, and walk to the very back to open it. Jay was trying to get into the trailer to open the door, but Roylene wouldn't let him go in it. Jay went over and tried to unhook the truck from the trailor. He tried for a very long time, and couldn't get it. By this time, the police had arrived. They had a firetruck too, but it was very small..we were in Idaho! Jay finally got the truck unhooked from the trailer and pulled away. At this time, the person who's car we were towing up got there. They got out of their car asstonished. Matt Howard comforted Roylene as she was telling them how sorry she was that their car was burning in our trailer.
After the fire was put out, and it had cooled off a little bit, our friends Leroy Mackay, Kenny Meyers, and their family's, on their way to the track, had saw us and stopped. They stressed how sorry they were and asked if there was anything they could do. Of course there was nothing they could do, so we told them to just bring home the trophy. After they left, advised by the police, we hooked the trailer back up to the truck, and we pulled it off the freeway to the nearest truck stop.
We stayed there for awhile, and then we pulled it up to Matt Howard's in-law's house in Lava Hot Springs. We were able to leave it there, until we could get things straightened out, and could get time to come clean it out.
We had 2 Jr.'s, many coolers of food and pop, about 100 dollars in grocery's, a generator, a 3 wheeler, 2 starters, tons and tons of fuel, a new motor we were taking up there to have a friend help us with, gear, countless tools/racing equipment, and much, much more that was lost.
About a week later, Christy, Roylene, and David went up and cleaned it out. Jay showed up about an hour later, as he had gotten off of work later than they had left. After we got it cleaned up, we washed ourselves off (we were covered in black ash) in the little creek in front of the house. We hooked the hollowed out trailer to the truck and pulled it home.
Ever since then, we have struggled financially with racing. Many of you may know the friend who's car we had. His name is Tyler Howard. You ever wondered why his car was called "TOTAL MELTDOWN"? Well, now ya know. After they got the car back together, they painted it and called it Total Meltdown.
We still do not know what caused the fire. So, that was a very, very horrible day for us. And David was first in points at RMR and Drag City, and his car burnt up. After that, our friend Ralph Perea made us another body, and we eventually repainted it to become the "Just Chillin" car.
